Mariann Yeager - the Sequoia project
Mariann Yeager (CEO) has more than 20 years of experience in the health information technology field. She currently serves as CEO for The Sequoia Project, a non-profit solely focused on advancing secure, interoperable nationwide health data sharing in the US. She also leads the Recognized Coordinating Entity (RCE) effort, in close collaboration with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT to develop, implement, and maintain the Common Agreement component of the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA) and to operationalize the Qualified Health Information Network (QHIN) designation and monitoring process. The Sequoia Project also serves as a steward of independently governed health IT interoperability initiatives including the Patient Unified Lookup System for Emergencies (PULSE) and the RSNA Image Share Validation Program

Dr. Bill Hazel is the Senior Advisor for Innovation and Community Engagement at George Mason University. In this role, he is engaged in multiple initiatives that range from coordinating and aligning activities focused on combatting the opioid epidemic to exploring a new approach to medical education at Mason. He also is a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Public Policy at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government. He completed his second term as Secretary of Health and Human Resources of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Prior to becoming Secretary of Health, Doctor Hazel grew up in Fauquier County and graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Civil Engineering and Duke University with a degree in Medicine, finishing his orthopedic residency at the Mayo Clinic. He was an orthopedic surgeon with an office practice in Northern Virginia, was Assistant surgeon for the Washington Redskins, and the team physician for the D. C. United Professional soccer club.

Sheila Kusnoor is a senior research information scientist at the Center for Knowledge Management at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Sheila joined Knowledge Management in 2011, after receiving her PhD in cellular and molecular neuroscience and completing postdoctoral training in the Department of Psychiatry at Vanderbilt.

Summary

In May 2019, member states of the World Health Assembly, the World Health Organization’s policy-setting body, agreed to adopt the eleventh revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11). To help guide preparations for ICD-11, a better understanding of the impact of the transition to ICD-10 for mortality and morbidity coding is needed. This talk describes findings from the literature regarding the impact of the conversion to ICD-10, including the 2015 U.S. implementation of the ICD-10 Clinical Modification and Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-CM/PCS).

Building off of the success of WEDI’s Summer Forum, which looked into the bridging of EDI to API, WEDI will offer a partial day post-con on December 5 in Crystal City, VA that will continue to look into the liberation of patient data for both clinical and administrative through open APIs. This hands-on experience will allow attendees the opportunity to learn how to capture patient demographics, use the HL7 FHIR server, discuss how HL7 FHIR and X12 work together and review several business cases. Additionally, learn more about what ONC FAST has accomplished to identify barriers to implementing FHIR at scale in the ecosystem. This event will help healthcare professionals what to consider when approached with HL7 FHIR.
