Get the FHIR Started

On March 9, 2020, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology (ONC) released their final rules on interoperability and information blocking which change how healthcare delivery organizations, health insurers, and patients exchange health data.

The final rules require Payers to effectively provide an outward facing, external data delivery system using FHIR to set up data retrieval and ingestion systems in a phased approach beginning January 1, 2021. Specifically, the rules require that Payers use FHIR APIs to deliver to customers/patients not just their claims/EOB based data, but also a full set of USCDI defined clinical data which is not typically contained in Payer’s systems.
